Street Scenes - Manning Boulevard

This is a 1890 photograph of the Western Avenue Toll Gate. Before the advent of the automobile many of the thoroughfares coming into Albany were plank roads, necessitating the use of boards, laid crosswise. At certain strategic points along the way, toll gates were erected, the tariff derived therefrom being devoted to the maintenance of the right-of-way and the salary of the toll keeper. The Western Ave. Toll gate was a few yards west of the junction of Manning Blvd. and Western Ave., at the extreme limits of the city line. As seen in the photo, the continuation of the highway narrowed to a single trail, branching out at convienient intervals to allow incomming traffic to pass

Manning Boulevard's Raised Tulip Beds in Bloom

Planting Project - September 9th, 2006
We built the raised beds at the intersection of Manning and Western on Sept. 9th. Attached are four photos. The crew was Duane Barker, Cynthia Gallivan, Lorraine Noval, Peter Duffy, Dianne Hansen, and Phil Hansen. The project was directed by Judy Stacey, the city gardener. The Manning Blvd crew assisted Judy's regular crew of Bernie, Pedro and Jose, who put in six hours on a Saturday so that they could work with our schedule.
